NINA TOBIEN
Downstairs - Uptight
12 January - 23 February 2008
Jan Winkelmann / Downstairs presents the first solo-exhibition of the artist Nina Tobien.
The existing display and storage architecture of the gallery's project space has been painted by the artist with enlarged cloth patterns. As a result, the overall impression conveyed by the room as originally designed by BURGHARD has been severely modified. The shimmering black-and-white patterns form a kind of backdrop for canvases tailored to the shape of ironing boards endowed with transferrals of works by well-known artists, monochromatic surfaces or paint remains. Subsequently they were turned inside-out and once again reworked by the artist: crumpled, over-painted, washed or scratched.
Tobien's site-specific exhibition emerges from an ironic dalliance with the conceptual couplings typical of her artistic work, such as duplication - reversion, quotation - uniquity, utilitarian object - art object, construction - destruction.
Nina Tobien (* 1976) lives in Frankfurt am Main, where she graduated at the Städelschule last year.
