Thomas Eller and Andreas M. Kaufmann have joined forces in a project specially designed for the physical parameters of the exhibition space.
In the center of the virtually cubic, darkened room is a rack containing two slide projectors, one above the other. A mechanism devised by Kaufmann enables each of them to rotate round its own axis without the encumbrance of a power line. The two projectors face in opposite directions, and both project a photographic self-portrait of Thomas Eller on the walls of the room. The two figures seem to be making a slight movement in the same direction as the projectors, enhancing the dynamic aspect of the moving projections.
Attached to a wall of the room is a sculpture – a photograph of Thomas Eller again, glued on aluminum and cut out. The photograph of this figure is identical with one of the projected photographs. Since they are also the same size, the projection overlaps the sculpture for a brief moment during its rotation.
The interaction of the moving projection and the static sculpture makes the viewer experience a multiple refraction of the space. The installation generates various moments of experience. In the first place the viewer finds himself caught in the middle of an imaginary duel between two opponents who are facing one another. And he might also feel hemmed in by the moving projections and get the impression that there is no escape from this "vicious circle".
You! was curated and organized by Jan Winkelmann.
