STEPHANE DAFFLON

Cocktail

3 November - 20 December 2007

We are pleased to announce the second solo exhibition of Stéphane Dafflon at Jan Winkelmann / Berlin.

The exhibition, entitled "Cocktail", presents six new paintings by the artist in which he returns to and paraphrases the motives of diverse past pieces. In contrast to the previous works, the colored surfaces of Dafflon's current pieces extend the total canvas and appear to transcend the boundaries of the paintings into the gallery space itself. The characteristic white background previously prevalent in the work of the artist is now completely absent. As a consequence, the current paintings appear less graphical and attain a higher level of abstraction and, in turn, are less reminiscent of logos or signets than his earlier work.

Stéphane Dafflon's non-figurative formal vocabulary conjoins in equal measures the influences of Minimal Art and Neo Geo while simultaneously evidencing playful references to geometric abstraction. A universal repertoire of signs and codes derived from the realm of contemporary visual culture, computer graphics as well as architecturally and spatially related issues condense within the work of the artist.

Stéphane Dafflon (born 1972) lives in Lausanne. His current solo exhibition "Statik Dancin'" can still be seen at the Frac Collection Aquitaine in Bordeaux until 21 December 2007. Furthermore, work of the artist is included in "Minimalism and Applied", the current exhibition at Daimler Contemporary, Berlin (the show runs until 27 January 2008).

Opening hours: Tue-Sat, 11 am - 6 pm
