TILO SCHULZ

"A SHORT FILM ABOUT..."

03.06.05 - 16.07.05

On Friday 3 June 2005 we will be opening the solo exhibition "a short film about..." by Tilo Schulz.

The exhibition by the Leipzig artist presents a mural and several wood veneer intarsia pieces. With these works, produced specially for the exhibition, Tilo Schulz (b. 1972) returns to aspects of presentation and communication structures, which he has addressed in many different ways over the last ten years.

The mural and intarsia pieces refer directly to Schulz's work "city fear / origami version (module 1 - 4)". The spatially extensive installation was created in cooperation with the writer Sibylle Berg and can be seen until 19 June 2005 as part of the exhibition "o.T. [City IV]" in the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig. It consists of a plug-in system of white modules on which extracts from Sibylle Berg's novel "Sex 2" are printed and it can be read as a metaphor for "city". Both the intarsia pictures and the mural, which extends through both exhibition rooms, represent a visual approach to the spatial and display structure of this work.

Alongside its function as picture and metaphor, the mural serves as a display for short analyses of picture and film scenes in which works by the American artist Frederic Remington (1861 - 1909) appear. The cultural connotation of a bronze sculpture by Remington as part of a set of office furnishings is, in this context, equally as interesting as the masculine roles and stereotypes of the cowboy myth, which Remington had a part in creating.

With the exhibition "a short film about..." Schulz links his interest in the decoding and visualisation of areas of activity and display functions with the analysis of gender-specific roles and representational models.

Works by Tilo Schulz will be shown in the autumn in the exhibition "50 years documenta / archive in motion" in the Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel (01.09. - 20.11.05).

Due to our participation at LISTE 05. The Young Art Fair the gallery will be closed from June 14 - 18.
